How to read an ATV specification: dimensions, mass, tyres and model names

A practical glossary and document-reading method, with the distinctions that prevent misleading comparisons.

Build an identity line first

Write the manufacturer, full model, year, variant and market before collecting numbers. That identity line prevents a common mistake: assembling an attractive specification from several similarly named vehicles.

Keep the source beside each figure. If a brochure and another sheet disagree, retain the conflict as an unresolved item rather than choosing the number that looks preferable. The model dossiers identify the reference and relevant limits of each example.

On a small screen, scroll the table sideways to read every column.

Dimensions need a purpose

Length and width help with practical questions about storage and transport. Wheelbase describes the separation between the axles; it is another measurement, rather than a substitute for overall length. A useful comparison labels the measurement and its unit clearly.

For a real loading or transport decision, the actual vehicle, accessories and loading arrangement need to be measured and assessed. A brochure figure is useful preparation, not a complete transport plan. Avoid inferring that a vehicle fits a trailer from one favourable dimension.

Read the definition of mass

Dry mass, wet mass and other stated definitions should not be silently compared as the same measurement. Keep the manufacturer's label with the figure. Also separate vehicle mass from the capacities or ratings relevant to a proposed loading arrangement.

Our comparison table leaves an unavailable or incomparable measurement explicit. A blank is more honest than importing a value from an older model year. The useful result is a set of comparable facts, not the fullest-looking grid.

Tyre construction is more than tread appearance

Maxxis distinguishes radial and bias construction through the arrangement of the carcass cords. The carcass is the tyre's structural body; the beads secure it to the rim. An aggressive-looking tread therefore describes only part of what you are considering.

Size, construction, load requirements, rim and the vehicle manufacturer's specification all matter to compatibility. Tyre mounting belongs with trained professionals. This guide gives no replacement fitment or generic pressure setting.

A sidewall maximum is a different kind of number

Maxxis's ATV safety guidance directs owners to the vehicle manual for cold-pressure requirements and warns against exceeding the tyre's maximum. The maximum printed on a tyre is a limit, not an everyday setting for every quad.

Even a familiar badge is insufficient for finding the right requirements. Use the full vehicle identity and its documentation; the maintenance guide explains how to keep those records together.

Keep the abbreviations in their groups

EPS concerns electric steering assistance. CVT and DCT concern transmission designs. A drive-system label concerns another part of the vehicle. The transmission guide explains the distinctions without reproducing an operating sequence.

If an advertisement mixes these terms as interchangeable comfort features, rebuild its information into the groups above. Then compare the actual versions. A numerical badge, an accessory or a photo should not have to carry more meaning than its documentation supports.

Use the right document for the next decision

A product sheet describes a reference. An owner's manual supplies model-specific operating and maintenance information. The actual vehicle's registration and approval information concern another set of questions. Read them together without expecting one to replace all the others.

For a purchase, connect the specification to the evidence file. For a holiday booking, connect it to the handover and the exact machine supplied.
