Define the role before choosing a badge. Occasional organised outings, regular leisure use and practical work place different demands on the purchase. Include how the vehicle will be transported and stored, and establish the actual access and documentation for the intended use.
A realistic shortlist has two parts: machines that fit the use, and evidence that lets you assess each particular example. A clean photograph answers neither part completely. The following method keeps the buying conversation specific without pretending to replace an inspection.

| Statement | Useful supporting material | What it still cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| Recently serviced | Dated invoice, vehicle identity, recorded hours or distance, work described | The present condition of every component |
| Little used | Dated meter readings and a coherent history | Whether calendar-based work is current |
| Ready for two people | The exact model’s seating and applicable vehicle documents | Eligibility from an accessory seat or photograph |
| Lots of extras | A list of accessories and relevant installation information | That every addition suits your intended use |
A useful history links a date and the vehicle identity to the recorded hours or distance, the work done and who carried it out. An invoice saying only “service” gives less information than an itemised record. A gap in the history means uncertainty; it does not, by itself, diagnose a failed component.
The named Polaris manual in the sources illustrates why several measures matter: maintenance can depend on calendar time, operating hours and distance. Low mileage therefore does not establish that every time-based item is current. Use the maintenance guide to organise the next discussion with a qualified workshop.
Commission an independent qualified assessment with a clear scope. Ask for findings to separate immediate safety work, scheduled maintenance and optional changes. A short start-up demonstration or a seller's confidence cannot replace that report.
Brake, steering, structural, fuel and electrical concerns need the correct professional attention. This guide is a way to organise evidence, not a home diagnosis or repair procedure. You can decide what uncertainty you will accept only after it has been identified clearly.

| Item | Machine A | Machine B |
|---|---|---|
| Asking price | €4,800 | €5,600 |
| Quoted immediate work | €800 | €250 |
| Transport | €300 | €50 |
| Total of these three items | €5,900 | €5,900 |
In the fictional table, three selected items total €5,900 for either machine. That does not make the vehicles equivalent: their condition, suitability, documents and unresolved risks may differ. It shows why the asking price alone is an incomplete comparison.
Add the costs that apply to your case, using real quotations and labelled assumptions. The ownership cash planner separates initial spending, annual provisions and money reserved for future bills. Its example amounts are invented, not a local price survey.
A winch, rack, tyre change or electrical addition needs a compatibility and installation assessment. List the accessories that serve your intended use and the evidence behind their installation. An expensive extra you do not need should not automatically increase what you are willing to pay.
An accessory cushion or backrest is particularly unsuitable as evidence of seating capacity. Use the exact model and applicable vehicle documents. The passenger guide covers that distinction.
For each shortlisted machine, retain its identity, the seller's claims, supporting records, inspection findings, quotes and unresolved points. That file gives you a reasoned basis for the decision and a starting point for ownership if you proceed.
If the use case is still unclear, spend time with an introductory programme or compare guided outings and rental first. Understanding what you enjoy can be more useful than rushing to own the first appealing vehicle.
Honda’s separately cited 2025 FA6 manual calls for inspection after an overturn or collision because damage can be hidden. Connect any reported incident with its professional assessment and recorded work, rather than accepting “cosmetic only” as a mechanical finding.
